Had a really cool solo exhibition presented by Dust ( dustartcollective.com ) showing off some of my work from the past year.
The work has to do with mapping what is in between or hidden in what we see. I drew inspiration for these paintings from landscapes and the human body, thinking about the experiences that I can offer to further inform people on their environment.
The bulk of the work was based on drawings from NYC and Bass Harbor, ME. I was focusing on patterns and elevations of both natural and human made to create interactive, experiential paintings. The paintings are based in relief and are very much material driven. As you move across the painting the view changes and create multiple views and surfaces that play with the eye in a way to create new forms through pos/neg space.
A smaller portion of the show was a new series I am developing that is still based on mapping but more about creating landscapes drawn the human body. There are many sides to this new series and the first group to come out of the studio were taken from celebrity blogs, specifically up-skirt photos of reality TV “celebrities”. Since I am still developing the series I don’t want to give to much away, but I am thinking about what is the fascination of celebrities in our society. By flashing your crotch for 5 more minutes of fame is a strange and fascinating thing. What are we all thinking? What is beautiful and what do we find repulsive in human behavior, and where does that meet?
