Paintings i think about in many layers, they are more then just a representation of one linear idea. There is usual a source of the visual information as well as larger ways I think about that visual source and how it relates to society and me personally. Then there is always the elements that make up the painting physically.
Usually as I paint I write a number of multi part phrases like this that help focus and inform me as I work through an idea. Sometimes it changes 100 percent as you go through the process, which just creates a deeper layer of material and information, the sediment that builds that painting.

This is just another way of documenting the process.

Two new under paintings, approx. 3 1/2x 3’. Using a new substrate of very dense industrial cardboard which has zero absorption. It’s much like painting on laminate but softer.
These 2 pieces continue my previous isolated island landscape paintings which are compositionally based on female genitalia.
…I’ll have to go into explaining that more in depth in future posts, for now enjoy the process.

Lilacs for Mother’s Day

Lilacs for Mother’s Day

In the studio

In the studio

The transformation from this stage to the finish product is...

The transformation from this stage to the finish product is great. As I stated previously, I think the process of production with its many layers and transformations is a valuable experience in which to educate your audience and bring them into your specific artistic way of thinking. That’s why I include many process photos indiscriminate of how I feel about the painting visually. This is a good example, because I am dissatisfied of the way it currently presents it self.

A hidden island, isolated and secret

A hidden island, isolated and secret

Chipping away at this really small painting.

Was doing a little Sunday morning interneting when I discovered my side table I refinished over the spring break made it on to Design Sponge! http://www.designsponge.com/2013/04/before-after-decorative-paint-details.html

I’ve been following Design Sponge for quite a few years now, and love their aesthetic, so it is quite the compliment to be on there (especially considering how obsessed I am with decorating our house).

Scroll down to the second project in the post to see my before and after.

biocanvas:
